Thank you for your interest in presenting a program for the patrons of St. Joseph Public Library (SJPL). We welcome program proposals and recommendations from the public, qualified speakers, and performers.

What are SJPL’s programming objectives?
A library program is an event that promotes the use of library materials or services and/or offers our community an educational, recreational, or cultural experience. Programs are planned for the interest and enlightenment of St. Joseph and surrounding communities’ citizens.
St. Joseph Public Library (SJPL) strives to offer a variety of programs for all ages that support the mission of the library and reflect the broad range of community interests.

What criteria does SJPL use to evaluate programming?
Selection of library program topics, speakers, presentations, and resource materials will be made by library staff on the basis of the interest and needs of the community and library users as well as the expertise and ability of the speaker to present effectively. The library does not offer programming that is purely commercial or religious in nature.

Can a commercial entity present a program?
Libraries enjoy working with local businesses and knowledgeable speakers; however, library programs must be noncommercial in nature. Library sponsorship of a program does not constitute an endorsement of the content of the program or the views expressed by the participants. The library cannot share patron/attendee information with speakers; however, speakers are welcome to bring business cards or other promotional material.
Programs are not allowed to serve as a platform for generating income for any sponsoring group or individual, except funds to support the library. Although a business representative or expert may present a program, no solicitation of business is permitted. The sale of products at programs is not allowed, with two exceptions:
1. Writers, performers, and artists may sell their own works at the library following library programs in which they are featured.
2. The Friends of the Library or Library Foundation may be invited to sell items at library programs.

What is the process for submitting a program proposal?
Submit your information using the program proposal form. To effectively evaluate your proposal, we require a summary of your qualifications, your contact information, topic, description of the program you would like to present and why you think it would be of interest to potential attendees. Please include details that provide a clear outline of your topic, fees, equipment needs, and availability. Your submission will be forwarded to the appropriate staff member for review.

How soon will I hear back from SJPL regarding my proposal?
The appropriate staff member will review your proposal and reach out to you if the library is interested in pursuing your topic. Programs are planned six months to a year in advance, so keep that in mind when proposing a time sensitive or seasonal event.

What are SJPL’s guidelines for handouts?
Speakers are welcome to share handouts with the program participants. The most effective handouts focus on the key concepts of the presentation and are easy to read. Handouts are a great way to reinforce the presenters’ credibility and professionalism and can provide contact information should the patron wish to pursue the topic further.

Please fill out the form below to submit your program proposal and staff will be in touch with you as soon as possible.
