POSITION: Senior Library Assistant
LOCATION: Carnegie Library
HOURLY RATE: $20.83
JOB STATUS: Full-time, includes evenings and Saturdays, Nonexempt
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Reports to the Branch Manager. Daily interaction with the public, children, and families. Performs clerical duties and support services as assigned; does related work and special projects as required. This job includes both work of a routine, repetitive nature for which there are clearly prescribed procedures and new situations and problems for which no precedents have been set. Staff in this class will be in charge of the branch in the absence of the branch manager. Persons in this class will be in charge of special programs or projects.
This position includes general circulation duties listed below but is responsible for programming at the branch. The Librarian also oversees the Summer Reading Program and is a liaison to nearby schools. Reports to the branch manager. Must be available to work evenings and Saturdays.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Branch’s programming specialist;
• Provides exemplary customer service;
• Interacts with staff and patrons of all ages with patience and kindness;
• Assists other staff members when needed and contributes in a positive way to team morale;
• Performs circulation desk duties as required (check out materials, registers users; place holds, request interlibrary loans, etc.);
• Gives information, reference service and readers’ advisory service to the public in person, over the telephone, and by email;
• Plans and presents programming;
• Ability to independently represent the library during community meetings, public speaking events, library tours, and programs as needed;
• Has charge of special project(s), service(s) or collections(s);
• Assists branch manager in promotional activities such as writing drafts of news releases and other promotional material (flyers, signage, displays, etc.), conducting in-house tours, speaking before community groups;
• Assists in the training and supervision of staff;
• Manages projects and/or processes;
• Makes recommendations for materials selections;
• Assists with the maintenance and weeding of materials in the collection;
• Assists patrons with library technology;
• Monitors Internet stations when in use;
• Keeps statistics;
• Handles clerical duties such as those relating to filing, shelving, and inventory;
• Processes library materials;
• Participates in workshops, webinars and other continuing education opportunities;
• Routinely purchases program, office, and building supplies;
• Serves on the Summer Reading Program Committee and may serve on other committees;
• Trains in other duties and departments to assist others when needed;
• Light housekeeping as needed in the building or grounds;
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively;
• Routine lifting up to 40 pounds, bending, squatting, and reaching from floor level to 6 feet in height;
• Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Skilled with computers and technology.
• Has an understanding of library objectives, functions, procedures, and techniques;
• Familiarity with principles of library organization and administration;
• Awareness of current trends, practices, and methods of librarianship;
• Understanding of the ways of bring materials and users together effectively;
• Ability to learn and retain procedures related to the operation of an automated integrated system;
• Ability to think analytically, to plan and to organize;
• Ability to supervise others;
• Ability to understand and carry out complex directions; an ability to establish and maintain effective and efficient relationships with library staff at several levels;
• Ability to deal with the public and other staff members in a consistently tactful and courteous manner;
• Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment;
• Ability to handle clerical functions with a high degree of accuracy;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Ability to work evenings and weekends.
ACCEPTABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of a baccalaureate degree in the liberal arts or a related field and one year of library experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
